ALEX WILSON'S UPLIFTING ROOTS CREW NAILED THEIR INTENTIONS TO THE MAST AT THEIR FIRST OF THREE NIGHTS AT THE PIZZA EXPRESS JAZZ CLUB, 10 DEAN STREET, LONDON W1D 3RW LAST NIGHT (THURSDAY 19th - SATURDAY 21st JUNE). Reggae just itself got a whole new set of heroes, bringing the definitive sound of Jamaica bang up to date with a new London & Latin twist. On their second ever, this crew were in the zone, sounding like they'd played together for years. This was Alex Wilson's first collaboration with Aswad's awesome drummer Kenrick Rowe and these artists together didn't just play their socks off; the musicianship was mesmerising. Add soul divas Aquilla Fearon and Niaomi Phillips to the mix plus solid support on bass from Colin Walker and you've got a whole new retro-boosted sound being reborn, letting out its first powerful cry. Carlos Santana's "Black Magic Woman" performed Bob Marley style with killer wah-wah guitar solos from Amy Winehouse's Robin Banerjee was a real tropical, feel good treat. For dancers, there isn't space at Pizza Express to strut your stuff but this is a real opportunity to get closer to the music, right at the creative cutting edge, so you can follow the music dance floor, right in the groove, with sabor. Get along to Pizza Express and enjoy. More: www.pizzaexpresslive.com Call: 020 7734 3220. Book a table to ensure your full enjoyment. London Salsa Scene, Soho Friday 20th June 2008.

LONDON SALSA SCENE REVIEW TOP GEAR FOR THE DANCE FLOOR Friday 6th February 2009

Lose Pounds and Start to Fancy Yourself in Suzi Q's Track Suit
A girl knows when she looks good. You meet up with your mates, they clap eyes on you and don't bother to say hello. Instead, they give you the once over and say: "Have you lost weight?" This was the reaction I got - and not just once either - while out road testing Suzi Q's new high performance track suit. You know these babies are doing the business when you start fancying yourself and your girlfriends check you out along with the blokes. Initially, I was a bit sniffy about the idea of wearing a track suit on the dance floor. I had a mental picture of a shapeless, fleecy number in powder blue with baggy knees and a saggy bottom. That is, until I tried it on. The main thing is this looks and feels darned sexy. Pants and jacket cling in all the right places, creating a great dancer's silhouette, highlighting the line of the body and fluidity of movement. Both jacket and pants are made from separate panels of material, giving a structured look, while inserts in different colours give character and visual interest. For the pants, think more lightweight, stretchy jeans than stretched out leggings. Whatever size your bum, these are designed to flatter. The jacket zips all the way up, has useful pockets and a soft, shiny look, contrasting with the matt look of the pants. The nylon-spandex mix is soft and slinky to the touch. This is a smart track suit, designed to keep you cool and eliminate nasty niffs, reassuring for us active dancers. It's suitable for boys too (check out Moe Flex and Mauricio Reyes) On the floor, it's comfortable and easy to wear, and I keep the jacket on as it keeps me just warm enough. A nice touch is Suzi Q will personalise your jacket with your website or dance group. Great value, very wearable. Somewhere between London and Havana, volcanic activity has triggered the emergence of a new tropical island – Salsa con Soul. Alex Wilson and his 12 piece Salsa Orchestra set off the eruption at launch parties for this hot Brit Crew's latest album parties Leeds, London and Birmingham. Salsa con Soul is the latest destination for Alex Wilson on his circumnavigation of world rhythms and beats. Inglaterra, Wilson's 5th album, was his first to feature the fire water of Salsa Dura neat, with tracks like Show Me and a salsafied version of Chaka Khan's Ain't Nobody appearing on 10 compilations and burning up dance floors in salsa clubs across the UK. Again, Wilson's own R&B Latino - title track from the eponymous album - created a cocktail of Cuban rhythms and R&B that blows away all the cobwebs on the dance floor. Now, the voyage continues to a new destination with Wilson's 6th album. The UK's top Latin/jazz pianist and band leaders of one of Britain's most popular salsa crews introduces a new flava and groove - Salsa con Soul con Gospel plus a new line featuring soul divas Aquilla Fearon and Naomi Phillips plus Elpidio Caicedo. Boldly going where no one has gone musically before, this UK band is consistently managing to turn out some of the most authentic and tastiest salsa grooves you'll hear anywhere in the world. With Salsa con Soul, Alex Wilson comes full circle, returning to his soul
